Adult attachment styles and anxiety disorders: an integrative clinical approach

They come into your consulting room with the same DSM diagnosis — and yet, nothing about their suffering resembles the other's. One ruminates aloud, multiplies messages between sessions, and asks for reassurance you sense will not soothe them. The other says everything is fine, lists three normal panic attacks, and waits politely for you to fix what their body is signaling without their consent. Same generalized anxiety disorder. Same panic disorder. Two clinical worlds.

This training gives you the interpretive framework that transforms how you listen to anxious patients — and concrete clinical tools, immediately transferable to your daily practice.

What you will learn

By the end of this training, you will be able to:

  • Identify each patient's adult attachment style through three targeted questions and validated tools (AAI, ECR-R, RSQ, PBI)
  • Distinguish the four anxious signatures specific to secure, preoccupied, dismissing-avoidant, and fearful-disorganized profiles
  • Articulate the DSM diagnosis with the attachment-based reading to build a differentiated treatment plan
  • Recognize adult separation anxiety, often underdiagnosed in routine practice
  • Mobilize four complementary therapeutic approaches: CBT, psychodynamic, schema therapy, mentalization
  • Adapt your interventions to a patient who deactivates emotion — starting from the body rather than from thoughts
  • Use alliance ruptures as therapeutic opportunities through a four-step repair protocol
  • Recognize your own attachment style and transform countertransference into a clinical tool

Detailed program

Module 1 — Foundations: Attachment and Anxiety The Bowlby–Ainsworth–Main legacy, internal working models, and the attachment system as a stress regulation system — the conceptual key of the entire training.

Module 2 — The four adult attachment styles Precise clinical description of secure, preoccupied, dismissing-avoidant, and fearful-disorganized profiles, with the specific anxious signature carried by each.

Module 3 — Clinical assessment of attachment style Validated assessment tools, attachment-oriented anamnesis, four clinical markers observable in session, and articulation with DSM diagnosis.

Module 4 — GAD and adult separation anxiety: the preoccupied signature The four early maladaptive schemas activated, three clinical pitfalls to avoid (over-reassurance, therapeutic fusion, catastrophic collusion), and four intervention axes including imagery rescripting.

Module 5 — Panic disorder, social phobia, and dismissing anxiety The central paradox of subjectively absent anxiety, the rebound effect of deactivation, and why standard CBT protocols stall with this profile — and what to mobilize instead.

Module 6 — Anxiety, trauma and disorganization Fearful attachment, complex PTSD (ICD-11), the differential with borderline personality disorder, the window of tolerance, and the three-phase approach.

Module 7 — The therapeutic alliance as laboratory The therapist as a new attachment figure, the two forms of alliance rupture according to Safran and Muran, the four-step repair protocol, and the place of countertransference.

Module 8 — Clinical integration: two case studies and synthesis Marie (34, preoccupied GAD) and Thomas (42, dismissing panic disorder) — two complete therapies, from assessment to earned security.

Who is this training for

This training is designed for psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, and mental health professionals who already have a clinical practice with anxious patients and wish to enrich their interpretive framework and therapeutic toolkit. No prior training in attachment theory is required: the foundations are laid in Module 1.

Why take this training

A genuinely integrative approach Most trainings on anxiety remain within a single framework. This one mobilizes four — CBT, psychodynamic, schema therapy, mentalization — articulating them through attachment theory as the integrating framework.

Constant clinical anchoring Every theoretical concept is connected to a concrete clinical situation: which questions to ask in anamnesis, how to read a patient's response, how to recognize a typical countertransference, when to intervene and when to wait.

Two complete case studies Marie and Thomas are followed from initial assessment through ending of therapy. You will see how the attachment-based reading transforms the treatment plan, what realistic progress looks like over two or three years, and what marks the end of therapy.

Tools immediately transferable to your practice The three key questions, the four-step repair protocol, the four clinical markers observable in session, the imagery rescripting protocol — every framework given is meant to be used the next day in your consulting room.
